Beam weapons are the primary type of weapon on both the various TSN classes of player starship and on the enemy vessels. They are direct-fire, meaning that they hit the enemy every time they are fired, and they do not travel along an arc, like torpedoes do. Beams do a set amount of damage per shot, and have specific firing arcs and firing ranges. The rate at which the beams fire can be changed by providing the beam system with more power. At full power, the beam fire rate triples, meaning that the beams will fire three times as often as they do at standard power settings.

 

A typical starship has beams that fire in large arcs covering the forward half of the ship, and often the beams will overlap in a smaller forward arc, meaning that directly in front of a ship, you can be hit by two beams at once. As example of this can be seen in the beam arcs for the TSN Light Cruiser itself, where there are two beams, each with a 144 degree firing arc. However, these beams overlap for approximately 100 degrees in the forward arc, creating a more deadly zone of dual beams, complimented by two 44 degree arcs of a single beam off to each side.

 

Each ship can have a different configuration of beam weapons, firing arcs, recharge times, etc. Some ships, such as the Kralien Dreadnought, also have aft beams. The damage dealt by enemy beams is tied to the difficulty level, with each point of difficulty doing one more point of damage, up to difficulty 11 where the damage jumps to 15 . (NOTE: Some Torgoth ships and Elite enemies do two or three times this amount.) So, at level 1, all non-elite enemy beams do a damage of 1 per shot, at level 5, they do a damage of 5 per shot, and so on.

 

The standard beams on TSN and Ximni classes of starship do a damage of 12 per shot.
