Downgrading Artemis for iOS or Android

Page history last edited by RyleyRA 6 years, 11 months ago

PLEASE NOTE: As of 12-21-2016 the PC version of Artemis will need to be downgraded in order to work with Android (and iOS) clients. You will not need to run the procedure to update the installation files as described under "Downgrading to Artemis 2.3 or 2.1". Also check Mission and Mod compatibility as they may require a specific version.

On several occasions, the release of a new version of Artemis on iOS or Android has lagged behind the release of a new version on PC. From Artemis version 2.0 to 2.3, this was not usually a problem. However, Artemis 2.4 introduces a new backwards compatibility issue which makes downgrading to 2.3 or 2.1 more complex and difficult.

It is far easier to upgrade Artemis version 2.0 or 2.1 to a higher version. If you bought Artemis 2.0 from the web site, you should keep a copy of that installation package, so you can use it if you need to "downgrade" after applying a patch. If you bought Artemis from Steam, you should keep that installation package, particularly if it was version 2.1 or 2.3. If you have either 2.0 or 2.1, you do not need to read further, you can just run your installation package again, and install the patch for the version that you want. If you have 2.3, just install the download patch as described below, you don't have to take any other steps.

It is also important to note that no version of Artemis can be downgraded to 2.0. The 2.1.0 patch was the first revision to be made available, so it is the earliest version you can "downgrade" Artemis to without buying a new copy. The 2.1.0 patch is not readily available any more, so the earliest version you can currently "downgrade" to is 2.1.1. Likewise, Artemis 1.7 and earlier was a different application, and is no longer available. You cannot downgrade to versions of Artemis earlier than 2.0.

Only PC versions of Artemis may be downgraded. Upgrade of Android and iOS clients are performed automatically by the Google Play and Apple Play stores, and it is not possible to have two copies of the same game installed.

Downgrade to Artemis 2.5 is not recommended. Artemis 2.5 included a patch release that was only posted on the Artemis forums, and was not officially released to Steam. Android and iOS versions were never upgraded to 2.5.

Downgrading to Artemis 2.4

Features that will be lost: Pirates, bombers and shuttles, the Infestation Scenario, fighters will not be able to track offscreen targets

To downgrade Artemis 2.6 to Artemis 2.4, first make a backup copy of the installation directory and install to THAT directory. Do not overwrite your 2.6 installation, as you will want it so you can play Artemis with the latest features.

Download the 2.4 patch from the link given, and run it. Change the install directory to the name you gave the backup directory. "Artemis2.4" is a good choice.

Downgrading to Artemis 2.3 or 2.1

Features that will be lost: 2.3 - Ximni race and ships, GM menu button interface, 2.1 - Fighters and carriers, upgrades, new monsters

Downgrading to Artemis 2.3 or 2.1 is somewhat more complicated, due to the backwards compatibility issue described above. Note this applies whether you are downgrading from 2.6, 2.5 or 2.4, although 2.5 and below should not be readily available any more on Steam. To begin the downgrade process, start by making a backup copy as described above. If you have downgraded to 2.4 in order to be compatible with Android or iOS, you may wish to copy the installation to yet another directory for these earlier versions.

Download the 2.1 or 2.3 patch from the links given, and run them. Change the install directory to the name you gave the backup directory. "Artemis2.1" or "Artemis2.3" is a good choice.

The only file that is incompatible in Artemis 2.4+ is "artemis.dxs". This file is not included in the 2.1 and 2.3 patches, so it will be the 2.4 version, designed for the new accent color textures. (As seen on the TSN Light Cruiser page) The 2.1 or 2.3 vesselData file will try to use the original texture (seen on the Scout page or the "Jayne's Fighting Starships" image on the Light Cruiser page) and it will not look right on that model. There are a couple of things you can do:

1) If you have a friend who has 2.1 or 2.3 of Artemis, borrow the "artemis.dxs" file from them, and copy it into the directory. You can copy a single game asset like that without having to buy a whole copy. (Artemis.exe is probably off limits, though...)

2) Copy "civilian1.dxs" over "artemis.dxs". Your Light Cruiser will look like an Escort, the engine trails will appear in the wrong place, and the silhouette on the Engineering display will not match the layout, but it will not effect gameplay. (Note you cannot change the texture files because that will make the other player ships look wrong)

3) Open the "vesselData.xml" file (you may have to set permissions to allow you to edit the file) and make the following change:

<art     meshfile="dat/artemis.dxs"    diffuseFile="dat/artemis_diffuse.png"
 glowFile="dat/artemis_illum.png"    specularFile="dat/artemis_specular.png" scale="0.2" pushRadius="150"/>

     to

<art     meshfile="dat/artemis.dxs"    diffuseFile="dat/LightCruiser_Diffuse.png"
 glowFile="dat/LightCruiser_Glow.png"    specularFile="dat/LightCruiser_Spec.png" scale="0.2" pushRadius="150"/>

This final option will leave the Light Cruiser looking like it does in 2.4. If anyone is still running the actual earlier version, (not downgraded) the ships will look inconsistent on your two computers. If this doesn't bother you, it is probably the best option. If your friend wishes to keep his copy of 2.1 or 2.3 around for missions or the like, he may wish to update the meshfile and textures for the Light Cruiser to the new version as well.
