Homing Torpedoes

A homing torpedo exploding upon contact with an enemy ship

Homing torpedoes are the main type of kinetic weapon for the Artemis class starship. A full compliment consists of 8 of these torpedoes. They do a raw damage of 25, either to enemy shields or hull, and have a top speed of 3 and a range of 5,400 units. These weapons can be fired in any direction, up to two at a time. (This is specific to the Artemis class starship. Other classes of ship may have a different complement or be able to fire more torpedoes, but the damage, speed and range is the same for all)

If fired at a specific target, the homing torpedo will lock on to that target and hit it unerringly, maneuvering to follow the target if necessary. If fired without a lock on, a homing torpedo will fly forward from the ship and search for a target nearby to lock onto. Homing torpedoes can lock onto a friendly starbase or ship, so be cautious when firing torpedoes without a target.

As with all torpedo types, the tubes reload at a standard rate of 15 seconds, but this rate can be affected by how much power is routed to the torpedo system. More power to the Torpedo system will make the tubes load and unload faster, and less power to the system will make the tubes load and unload slower, and taking all power from the system will make the tubes stop working.

Starbases can produce and store these torpedoes. It takes 3 minutes for a starbase to produce one, and each base can hold up to 30 of them, making it possible to fully refill the Artemis class ship with homing torpedoes fairly easily.

Also, it is possible to trade in 150 energy from the starship's reserves to create a homing torpedo, or to trade in a homing torpedo for 100 energy. As of Artemis 2.7, these values can be edited in the artemis.ini file, and as of 2.7.2 the damage, speed, and turn rate of the homing torpedo can be changed as well. This feature was removed in 2.7, but was previously available all the way back to Artemis 2.3. Changing the speed will also change the range, as a slower torpedo will not go as far before it self-destructs. The base build rate and initial supply can also be edited.

Fighter craft carry a variation of these torpedoes called "missiles". They are smaller than the torpedoes used by capital ships, and are fired in the forward direction without a lock on, but are functionally identical to homing torpedoes. Changing the stats in artemis.ini will edit these missiles as well.

As of Artemis 2.7, homing torpedoes are no longer called "Homing" but just called "Torpedoes" on the Weapons console and information displays. Presumably, this is because all torpedoes are homing, and to call them "Homing" might imply the other torpedo types are not. Note that probes, also introduced in 2.7, are the only ordinance type that is not homing.
