Mines (Torpedo)
Mines are the third type of torpedo weapon available on the Artemis class starship. They are deployed to a position directly behind the ship at a distance of 634 units, (Assuming that the ship is not moving. The deployment distance at full impulse is about 750, and at warp 1 it is about 1000) and are immobile. Like nuclear torpedoes, they have an area of effect, making them dangerous to groups of enemy ships. They will detonate once a ship is within a distance of 500 units, so careful placement is necessary to make the mines useful, and to get the best results. However, it should be noted that even the ship that launched the mines can be caught in the blast, so it is often best not to lay mines while engaged in heavy dog-fighting, since this increases the chance of the mine detonating before the launching ship can clear the blast area.
The damage that mines do is also dependent on the distance a target ship is from the center of the explosion. So the ship nearest the explosion will suffer the most damage, while ships on the fringes will take less damage.
Like all torpedo types, mines reload or unload in 15 seconds. They can be produced by starbases, at a rate of one mine every 4 minutes, and each base can hold up to 30 mines at the start of the game. The Artemis class starship itself can only hold 6, so it is often possible to completely refill the ship's hold with mines at every docking.
As with all torpedoes, the damage, speed, turn rate, build time and initial supply at a base can all be set in the artemis.ini file.
