Rules and Regulations of the TSN

1 Officer Etiquette

1.1 Beginning a session

1.1.1 At the beginning of each session, officers must follow official protocol as outlined below.

1.1.2 Officers will gather in the main TSN channel. At 8.30pm GMT, the senior officer will call for silence and ask officers present to report in. All officers attending will report their name and rank, beginning with the officer at the top of the channel list.

1.1.3 When the first Captain enters the channel, the most senior officer present announces “Captain on deck”. All chatter will cease and officers will come to attention until given permission to be at ease.

1.1.4 When additional captains enter the channel, an additional announcement is not required.

1.2 Officers will present their name to show their rank and last name in the TSN channel.

Example – Lt. J. Smith (Acting)

Cdt. – Officer Cadet

Ens. – Ensign

Lt. Jr. – Lieutenant-Junior

Lt. – Lieutenant

Lt. Cdr. – Lieutenant Commander

Cdr. – Commander

Cpt. – Captain

1.3 Addressing other members of the TSN

1.3.1 When addressing officers more senior in rank, you must address them using their rank. Example; a Lieutenant addressing a Commander would use their rank.

1.3.2 When addressing officers of lower rank, it is courtesy to address them using their rank.

1.3.3 When addressing other members, all comments must be appropriate and professional. Language of an offensive nature directed at a fellow officer is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.

2 The TSN Fleet

The TSN fleet is composed of official TSN vessels as well as Academy vessels.

2.1 Academy Vessels

2.1.1 Academy vessels are classified as training and reserve vessels and do not form part of the active TSN fleet. They may however be called upon if the main fleet is unavailable, and therefore should stand ready for active duty.

2.1.2 Academy vessels can be created by any officer of any rank. There are no official restrictions on who can join an Academy vessel or on the position that they crew.

2.1.3 Members of academy vessels can choose to disband the vessel at any point.

2.1.4 Members of academy vessels can leave the vessel at any point without having to give notice.

2.2 TSN Vessels

2.2.1 TSN vessels are classified as official TSN vessels and form part of the active TSN fleet.

2.2.2 TSN vessels can only be commissioned by TSN Command.

2.2.3 Command of a TSN Vessel will be assigned by TSN Command.

2.2.3.1 To become a captain of a TSN vessel, an officer must hold the rank of Commander or higher.

2.2.3.2 Temporary command of a TSN vessel can be given to a Lieutenant-Commander.

2.2.3.3 Captains of TSN vessels are required to recruit and train their own crew.

2.2.3.4 Captains are required to keep a record of their crew. When a new officer joins the captain’s crew, the officer’s record will be presented to the captain so that they may be edited and kept up to date.

2.2.3.5 If a captain feels that one of their officers is ready for promotion they can put the officer forward for the officer examinations.

2.2.3.6 If a captain feels one of their officers is deserving of a citation for exemplary performance, they can inform TSN Command who will review the case and award

appropriate citations. The captain will then update the crew record with the reference to the citation.

2.2.4 When recruiting a new officer, TSN Command must be informed. The newly recruited officer will then be officially assigned to the TSN vessel.

3 Promotions and Officer Examinations

3.1 If a captain of a TSN vessel feels that they have an officer who is ready to be advanced to the next rank, they can submit the officer for examination.

3.1.1 On submission of the candidate, the officer will hold the rank of Acting Officer until they are either withdrawn from the examination process or they successfully pass their examination.

3.1.2 On successful completion, TSN Command will award the officer the promotion to the next rank. This promotion must be recorded on the officer’s personal record by their Captain.

3.1.3 If an officer wishes to withdraw from the examination process, they must inform TSN Command. Their original rank will then be reinstated.

3.2 Examinations will be conducted by a board of TSN Command officers. After the examination, the board will convene for discussion and will inform the candidate of the outcome.

4 TSN Command

TSN Command is responsible for the direction and management of the TSN.

4.1 Revisions to any official TSN documentation or training course will be completed by TSN Command.

4.1.1 Suggestions for new content, new ideas to develop the TSN and the creation of new training programs must all be submitted for review. TSN Command will review the submissions and implement any changes which it feels will benefit the TSN. The outcome of the review will be communicated to the individual who submitted the new content.

4.1.2 Training courses that have been created will be reviewed and given official approval before they can be implemented. Note; this does not affect training that may be conducted by a Captain with members of his/her own crew aboard his/her own vessel.

4.2 TSN Command is responsible for conducting all examinations, disciplinary hearings and awarding all promotions and citations.

4.2.1 A member of TSN Command will contact any individual involved in such proceedings (examinations, hearings and award ceremonies) in order to arrange a date and time for the proceedings to be held.

4.3 TSN Command will hold copies of all officer records. Officer Cadet records will be held and updated by TSN Command. Captains are responsible for sending an updated copy of the officer records belonging to the officers under their command.

5 Disciplinary Procedures

5.1 Should an officer wish to accuse another officer of misconduct, they should contact a member of TSN Command, stating clearly their charge against the officer. TSN Command will then make a decision as to how to address the charge; this may be through a formal reprimand, a disciplinary hearing, or immediate action.

5.2 A formal reprimand will be recorded on the officers record. A message will be emailed to the officer stating that there has been a formal reprimand issued and the reasons why it has been issued.

5.2.1 Formal reprimands will be issued for less severe breeches of discipline.

5.2.2 Officers can appeal against the decision to issue a formal reprimand (see appeals)
