Duty Officer
A Duty Officer assists Senior Officers with running the Duty Shift for the evening. They are responsible for organising the officers and officer cadets ready for briefings, ensuring officers know and are following standard protocols, rules and procedures as well as keeping the Senior Officers informed of any other issues that occur during the duty shift.
Role and responsibilities of the Duty Officer
A duty officer must:
- Add the suffix |DO or |Duty Officer at the end of their name
- Be available at least 30 minutes before the duty shift is due to begin
Before a duty shift, a duty officer may be required to:
- Greet new arrivals in the docking bay
- Provide information on protocol and procedure to new arrivals
- Inform senior officers of new arrivals requiring authorisation to board the station
- Inform new arrivals of the correct suffix to indicate expertise e.g. | Hlm, | Wea, | Eng, | Sci, | Com
During a duty shift, a duty officer is required to:
- Direct officers to the briefing room when instructed by a senior officer
- Communicate with officers who arrive late
- Inform senior officers of officers who need to leave before the end of the duty shift
- Conduct the roll call at the start of a duty shift
- Dismiss officers at the end of a duty shift
- Announcing the entry of an officer ranking Captain or above to a room
Applying to be Duty Officer
To be eligable to be a duty officer, the applying officer must hold the rank of Lieutenant Junior or above. An email must be sent to a member of the command staff at least 35 minutes before the duty shift is due to begin. Command Staff will then assign the officer at the beginning of the Command Staff meeting, and the officer will be informed at least 25 minutes before the duty shift is due to begin.
