Basic Training

When an officer cadet leaves the TSN academy, they are required to continue their basic training through self-study and by gaining practical experience. On completion of this final phase of their training, there will be an examination to determine the suitability for promotion to Ensign and a full TSN officer.

Examinations

Examinations are designed to check the understanding of new officers. An examination board of senior officers will test the candidate and make a decision about whether they are ready for promotion to full officer.

Requirements

To enter for an examination, the Officer Cadet must:

  • have attended a minimum of two duty shifts;
  • have practical experience of all roles, gained during a duty shift;
  • have a good knowledge of how all the roles aboard a TSN vessel operates;
  • meet the requirements for the rank of Ensign.

The Officer Cadet may be put forward for an examination by a senior officer, or the cadet may opt to put themselves forward for examination if they feel they meet the requirements.

The Exam

The exam will take place in an examination suite aboard a command station. A board of senior TSN officers will gather to conduct the examination. Most of the examination will be held as an interview, with the examination board asking questions about the different roles and responsibilities aboard a TSN vessel. More in depth questions based upon the chosen area of expertise will also be asked. For some roles, this may also include a practical examination.

Passing and Failing

Should an officer cadet pass their examination, they will be informed shortly after and presented with an updated officer record, indicating the date of graduation and the new rank.

If the officer cadet did not complete the examination to a satisfactory level, they will be informed that they have failed to meet the expectations for Ensign. The cadet may be re-entered for their examination, but only after they have completed at least one full duty shift.

Training Documents

A series of training documents have been written to support officer cadets in their training. They are designed to allow the cadet to study in preparation for their examinations and contain all the knowledge that they must know. Examination questions will be based upon the information in these documents.
