Kralien

The Kralien language word order is Object-Verb-Subject or OVS. Linguists for years have tried to make sense of how this could work given that there were no personal pronouns reflecting the speaker. The best way to understand it, by listening, is to add filler words that we Terrans use all the time such as "which" "the" "by" and so-on. Apparently the absence of the pronoun is because it is implied. So if it isn't clear, it must be the person speaking.

They've also found that, for some strange reason, there are no sounds made by the lips so nothing like "b" or "p" is heard. No one knows why this simple sound is not heard. Perhaps it is impolite or unholy somehow since they are a reverent race for the most part. Others not heard are "f" and "v", perhaps for the same reason.

The sounds heard seem to correspond one-to-one with their glyphs or an alphabet if you will. The writing medium of the forum does not allow for their lettering to be used so a Latinised transliteration was created. It is also easier for those of us who speak the Terran Interstellar Language to comprehend.

The alphabet

a
ah as in avocado
d
d as in door
e
eh as in elephant
g
g as in gargoyle
h
h as in hotel
i
i as in igloo or machine
k
k as in kite
l
l as in llama
m m as in mom
n n as in note
o o as in boat
q kk - has no TIL equivalent. It's basically a harsh sounding K.
r r as in the American English rope. It is never trilled.
s s as in send
ŝ sh as in shoe
t t as in toe
u u as in glue
ŭ u as in utter
y y as in yo-yo
z z as in zoo

There are a small host of prefixes and suffixes used to create additional words or meanings.

Prefixes

se opposite
ti with
ker more
zi most

Suffixes

di language
na person
oi adjective
ten noun
ti diminutive
to group
ua augmentative
re adverb
li plural
iz possession
ili you / your
le pair
ya past
zi future

The prefixes and suffixes can also stand as words in their own right and joined together. For example: aiyadi can be "sacred language". Also, seaiya can be "unholy". These two words are not in the dictionary yet as they are examples of some of the simple things that can be done.

Some may need explaining: ten is used to turn words into nouns. Their language seems to be action oriented with objects given a back seat. So if a noun is needed and there isn't one, you may be able to find the verb and add ten to it. "Say" is moqi so a saying could be moqiten. The language is still being deciphered from recordings and writings found in the debris of destroyed ships and the dictionary will be fleshed out in time.

Allowed Letters and Groupings

Consonants: d g h k l m n q r s ŝ t y z
Vowels: a e i o u ŭ

Suffixes

Change a word form:

  • ten = word to noun
  • oi = word to adjective (pronounced oh-ee, not "oy" as in "boil")
  • re = word to adverb
  • di = word to language of word (always becomes a noun)
  • to = makes a group. Take "whale" or nezin. A herd of whales is nezinto. Groups of ships, people, planets, stars, ... anything that you can group can use this.
  • na means a person who is or does.

Tenses

  • ya = past
  • zi = future

Plural

  • le = for pairs of items (hands, shoes, etc.) - Does not need a number as it is implied.
  • li = for all other items

Possessive

  • iz = possession

Augment and Diminish

  • ua = augmentative - augments or magnifies the importance or type.
  • ti = diminutive - diminishes a word such as turning a war ŝemaq into a minor skirmish ŝemaqti.

Other

  • ili - is the suffix for "you". It is always the last suffix attached to the word and it can mean "you" as in utemateini or "you will surrender". Or it can be placed with a noun giving the meaning "your" as in tonduini or "your ship".

Prefixes

Comparative and Superlative

(good => better => best; large => larger => largest)

  • ker = more like in English where we ad "-er". (It's called a comparative.) Good = zaŝa, better = kerzaŝa.
  • zi = most similar to adding "-est". (It's the superlative.) Good = "zaŝa, best = lezaŝa.

Opposites and negation (never changes the form)

  • se = opposite, anti-, un-, de-, ... Something like adding "anti" to "matter" to make "antimatter" or the opposite of matter.

Association

  • ti = with as in the preposition such as tioze murili meaning "go with the captain".

Rules in using affixes

  • If a word ends with the same letter as the beginning of a suffix, drop either letter.
  • If a word begins with the same letter as the ending of a prefix, drop either letter.

Word Order

  • Object-Verb-Subject.
  • Adjectives and adverbs precede the words they modify.

Articles

There are none in the Kralien language.

Pronouns

  • There are no first person pronouns (I, we, us, me, my, mine, our). It is always implied.
  • Second person uses a suffix ili to denote "you" (singular or plural) for verbs or "your" for nouns implying possession.
  • Third person uses four pronouns, identified in the dictionary as Pronoun 1 - 4. Use these in the order of the nouns addressed previously. They can be any gender and number (he, she, it, they...)

Marker words

  • gud = Imperatives (commands) are the first word in the sentence. From that point everything in the sentence is considered a command to the one listening.
  • zi = Questions are the first word in the sentence. From that point everything in the sentence is considered a question.

Connectives and Conjunctions

(and, or, but, however, either, also, ...) These divide the sentence into sentence-1 conjunction sentence-2.

Examples

gud teranali eŭ tenig eminili
[command] Terran-person-plural from rent collect.
Terrans from rent collect!
Collect the rent from the Terrans!

zi teranali eŭ tenig eminili
[question] Terran-person-plural from rent collect-you?
will Terrans from rent collect you?
Will you collect the rent?

mirnle hir denada kergurŝ muke hir
hands-pair pron-1 than comp-big mouth pron-1.
hands his than bigger mouth his.
His mouth is bigger than his hands.

jan yelaliya mari ilti sta ya moqiya hir - gud tenig emin
John see-past Mary and him toward say-past she - [command] rent collect.
John saw Mary and him to said she, "rent collect."
Mary saw John and she said to him, "collect the rent."

Notes:

There are no capitals or punctuation. Each sentence or question is on a line of it's own. If it extends to another line it is indented two spaces.

Quotes are defined by a hyphen before the end of the sentence. Anything after that hyphen is considered something spoken by someone else.

egno dingel-dangel ya moqiya oze - zi teranali eŭ tenig eminili
moqiya hir - hade iadi

The captain said to officer Dingle-Dangle, "Will you collect the rent?"
He replied, "Yes sir." (Lit.: He said, "Yes [honorific marker]").

Notice that the honorific marker iadi is at the end of the sentence. It is something like a separate phrase meaning "sir, your honor, your highness" such that you would say to a member of royalty for example, "It would be my pleasure, your highness". It is not a part of a sentence but rather tagging that you respect the authority the person represents. It is something like an afterthought said so it is put at the end always.

Numbers

The numbering system is base six. We think this is because they are using five fingers on one hand for units and groupings of six on the other. It works like this:

Make two fists. This represents zero. On your right hand count from one to five. This represents 05. Now, open your first finger on your left hand and close all of them on your right. This represents six or 10 meaning "one six and zero units". If you keep this going you will be able to count to thirty-five or 55. The next number would be 100 which is 36 or six squared. 1000 is six cubed. 10000 is six to the fourth power.

To summarize it works as below:

0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 13 ,14, 15, 20, 21... 54, 55, 100, 101, 102... 154, 155, 1000...
